we strip the blood from our veins,
we crack the iron of our teeth,
and we pierce bones through our skin.we unmake ourselves, brick by brick.
rome’s armies are retreating,
unnatural for a city built on war.this is easy for us,
too easy.
it will frighten you how easy it is.you will want it and you will be fearful,
and that fear will make you want it more,
because we have none.we become animals when the gods are
looking elsewhere. an emptiness comes into
our eyes, and everything goes quiet.we are not the answer to an age old
question, ‘what does it mean to be human?’
we are another question entirely.‘how does one learn to be less than?’
